Frequently asked questions
What is “happy gas” for dental treatment?
“Happy gas” usually refers to nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen, breathed through a small nose mask as inhalation sedation. It can help some children feel more relaxed while they remain awake.
Does happy gas put a child to sleep?
No. Inhalation sedation is not general anaesthesia. The child generally remains awake and able to respond; a trained team monitors the child during treatment.
Does nitrous oxide replace local anaesthetic?
Not necessarily. Inhalation sedation helps with anxiety, while local anaesthetic may still be needed to numb the treatment area. The dentist will explain what is planned.
Is happy gas right for every child?
No. Suitability depends on the child’s health, cooperation, ability to breathe through the nose and the proposed treatment. A dentist should assess and explain alternatives.
What if my child is frightened of the dentist?
Tell the team what worries your child and what has happened at past visits. The dentist can discuss a gradual introduction, the treatment plan and available comfort options.
General information only. A clinical assessment is needed to advise on suitability, risks and a personal plan.
